Smooshy Skittlette Mani with China Glaze, CrowsToes, Polish ‘M plus life update

Purchased by Me buttonHi everyone! Long time no talk – like almost 2 weeks, I think? I know that’s not really too long of a time but it sure seems like it. Keep reading if you’d like to know more about the future of the blog and a manicure with China Glaze, CrowsToes, and Polish ‘M.

So as most of you know, I have 4 kids now, ranging in ages from 10 to almost 1. I don’t get much sleep (almost 1 year old is still nursing – yes, even during the night), I get up early, I’m trying to improve my health so I workout during the day, and I’m pretty much constantly going and/or my kids have something going on (or kids are sick, like this past weekend which means I get even less sleep). Not to mention that some day (*sigh* *cry*), I’ll be moving (please, dear God, within the next 6 months!). AND, I’m battling anxiety and depression on an almost daily basis. It’s fucking wearing!

Every night when I’d like to sit down and blog, my mental energy (putting the words together in coherent sentences) is gone. Like…kaput.  I mean – I probably have enough pictures/swatches/nail art to show you for at least 50 blog posts. I just don’t have any energy to type shit up! And between you and me, if I have any energy left at night, I’d rather just do my nails – not sit and swatch, take pictures, edit pictures, write up blog posts, schedule blog posts, etc.

I’ve been thinking about the future and direction of this blog and part of me wants to keep going, part of me wants to shut it down. I love my blog, I love talking about polish and nail art and new releases and my favorite companies (indie and mainstream). I love showing off makeup looks (though that hasn’t happened in…forever). I still get the itch to show off polish and nail art!

So I’ve settled on a compromise – for now. I’m going to keep blogging, but I won’t be taking 50+ pictures of each polish (and/or pose!). I have to let my inner perfectionist be disappointed! I’ll take one or two pictures and that will have to be good enough. I honestly don’t even know if I’ll continue to watermark. I don’t think I’ll have energy to sit and swatch, so if I do show off straight swatches, it probably won’t be a whole collection at a time.

I won’t be saying a lot in blog posts – not only because putting words together is hard (so hard!), but honestly because sometimes I don’t think people even read blog posts anymore. So, information will be bare bones – how many coats, formula, technique (if we’re talking nail art). I’m going to try to stick to a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule but I can’t guarantee.

I realize that there are bloggers out there that can handle the stress of running a blog (and all it entails), children, household, not to mention just regular life stress. Right now, I’m not that person. I’ve been trying and trying and now instead of forcing it, I’m going to try to go with the flow. I hope you’ll stick with me while I’m trying to figure my shit out.

  1. I do hope you’re able to keep blogging, I enjoy your posts and seeing your polishes even though I don’t comment much (at all).

Please, don’t worry about perfection. Actually, I kind of prefer non-perfect pictures because that’s what polishes look like a lot! I did a one week food blog for a site years ago, and I quickly learned: don’t sweat the pictures. I took two of each dish, picked the better one, and if there wasn’t a better one, I took the first and moved on. I don’t know if that method will help you, but I figured I’d throw it out there.

Finally – yes, I read blog posts. This is why I prefer blogs – a picture with three superlatives and 1400 hashtags does not tell me what I want to know about the polish (like is the formula a disaster, did it not dry, etc.) I understand cutting back – your sanity and your real life come first! – but I appreciate the time you take to post your feedback!

    • Thank you so much for saying something. Blogging can be a grind but I truly do enjoy sharing polishes and nail art still. I can imagine that food blogging there is even more of a perfection drive, and that tip actually does help! Taking so many pictures can drive me crazy because really there isn’t that much difference between picture 1 and picture 50!

And thank you for being someone who still reads posts. Sometimes it feels like an echo chamber! Hopefully I can get myself squared away but in the meantime, I’ll still be here 💖 much love!

  2. I don’t post much but do read your blog when you post. I’ll try to do better about posting comments. I prefer blogs. I guess I’m old school. I don’t do instagram and most of the other social media out there. Just too much to keep up with. I think scaling back a bit is a good thing considering children, possible move soon and just life in general. I’m sorry you are feeling overwhelmed at this time. I myself dislike this time of year due to seasonal depression. Hopefully life will be much better for you soon. Please take care of yourself.
BTW, I love the combination on your middle and ring finger. I never would have thought to put these colors together!

    • Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. I agree that social media can be overwhelming, I’ve scaled back there too. I hope I won’t be so stressed out in a few months when we are moved, I know that has just taken a lot out of me. I hope you are taking care of yourself as well during this time.

  3. ((Hugs)). I feel the same. I’m very overwhelmed woth life right now and while I continue to paint my nails, I donct even take pics. I just don’t have the energy. I’m thinking of switching over to microblogging on Facebook and IG since I have more people interacting on those platforms than I do on my actual blog anyway. It feels like nobody reads blogs anymore.

    • Right? Like I could just say a bunch of gobbledygook and no one would ever know! That’s how I feel anyway. I hope you at least continue to microblog, you have a lot going on as well. Hugs back, lady. 💖

  5. It’s so hard to keep going after you’ve been doing this for so long. I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it is to balance life/family/kids and still blog. I can’t even blog consistently anymore and all I have to worry about is me. For the last year I have also been thinking about shutting down my blog…it’s really the next step but I find it so difficult to do so. I’ll try to be better about commenting when I read your posts because I know how it feels when it seems like no one reads posts anymore. Do what works best for you and enjoy blogging again!

    • Your nails have always been goals for me. You’ve been doing this longer than I have, and I’m just amazed at people who can keep going! Know no matter what, I’ve loved your blog!

Thanks for commenting, I love hearing from you!
